Three miles of beachbreak stretch from the National Trust site of Godrevy to the North, round to Gwithian and Hayle Rivermouth to the south.
At the northern end, Godrevy faces west and picks up any swell going;
it works on all tides up to neap high, but needs an offshore wind from
the east quadrant to be really good. Gwithian Towans, the next spot along,
works under similar conditions but will be slightly smaller. The waves here with a good swell can be excellent and and an amazing place for a surf, just you, the waves and the sand dunes for company. The
sandbanks south of this provide good fun for all abilities as the swell
rises — the further south your progress the smaller it becomes. The two mile stretch of beach from Gwithian to Hayle rivermouth has numerous peaks which means on good days, you can often have a peak to yourself.
Hayle
Rivermouth has fun waves but needs a large swell to start working; it will be about half
the size of Godrevy. To get here you drive through Hayle and follow signs to the beaches.
Gwithian Towans and Godrevy are National Trust and so there aren't loads of surf shops and houses but there is fantastic scenery and coastal walks, a few cafés and shops dotted along the dunes and a piece of untouched Cornwall. When the wind is southerly, head to Porthmeor in St Ives.
