Perranporth picks up any swell going and has plenty of space for everyone with fun beachbreak waves. Perranporth is two-mile stretch of west-facing beachbreak with the main surf breaks at Droskyn in the south through Perranporth beach to the long sands of Penhale to the north. The cliffs at either end give some protection from cross-shore winds and easterlies are offshore. The waves here are suitable for all abilities are there are surf schools and surf hire for those wanting to give surfing a go. The beach holds up to about 6ft before the rips become too strong and paddleout become too much.

the waves at the southern end of the beach, Droskyn, are predominantly lefts, and are best from mid- to three-quarters up. The headland refracts the energy of the swell and generates a solid left that can produce good long rides. This also creates some fun wedgey peaks.

The middle stretch of Perranporth to the far north end, Perran Sands, can be reached via the holiday camp on top of the dunes and offers peaky waves, best from mid to neap high tide.

There are plenty of facilities and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere in Perranporth making it a great surf holiday destination. There are surf shops, cafés and holiday gift shops although out of season, many of these are closed. The Watering Hole pub is smack in the middle of the beach and puts on good music, has good food and welcomes kids, dogs and vast amounts of sand.

Other beaches to look at in the region if Perranporth isn't quite working are Fistral Beach or Holywell to the north and Porthtowan and Gwithian to the south.

Tips

Parking and driving in Perranporth in the summer can be a nightmare. Make sure you pay at the Haven holiday park reception to park for Perran Sands or they will clamp you. You can almost always find a quiet peak here and it’s got a more chilled vibe than Newquay. Save some energy for the walk back up the killer dune.
