Surf Information

Compton Bay is probably the most consistent spot on the Isle of Wight. a southwest-facing beachbreak which is best around threequarters tide. Fields holds waves up to six feet and is fairly consistent with lefts and rights, best at mid to high tide. Not really for beginners. Middle Compton has more powerful peaks. Hanover Point is an A-frame reef which is always crowded when on; has some rocky bits. The breaks face southwest-facing and are best around three-quarter tide.

Freshwater Bay is a righthand point situated towards the western end of the island. Doesn't work often but can offer good waves breaking over rocks when it's on. Faces south. Needs a big southwest groundswell plus light winds from the north quadrant to be any good. Works from low- to mid-tide only. Advanced surfers only. Rocks.

Head to Niton when Compton starts to get blown out. Offers short punchy righthanders running close to the boulder reef. Usually two peaks to surf. South-facing spot situated on the southern tip of the island which can occasionally offer good rights breaking over sand-and-rocks. Needs a big southwest swell plus light northerlies to be any good; works around threequarters tide only. Advanced surfers only. Rocky.

If Niton gets blown out head further west to Ventonor, Shanklin (East-facing beachbreak which needs a big southwest windswell or an east swell to work. Best around threequarters tide.) and Sandown. All fun beachbreaks which offer fun, punchy shorebreak waves. All best mid to high-tide and also work on strong easterly winds.

Tips

Compton works well in even small swells so gets pretty popular.
