Whitsands Bay is located just 8 miles from Plymouth. It's four mile stretch of southwest-facing beachbreak offers surf for all abilities and is considered an area of outstanding natural beauty with views as far as the Lizard in Cornwall and over Devon to Dartmoor.
There needs to be a very large south westerly swell for Whitsands to work. The waves are best at low tide. Portwrinkle, at the western end, is usually better on big swells. The waves at both these spots are harder to predict than other spots, with big rips and often a hard paddle out on bigger days unless there are offshore winds and it's clean.
Holiday Which? magazine described the Whitsands Beach as one of the top three beaches in Cornwall saying it is "spectacular", "unspoiled", and "an uncrowded ribbon of sand that's long and spacious yet blessed with rocky snug's". If the surf is flat there are cliff walks, great fishing and the Eden Project is only 40 minutes drive.
