Just like many areas on the south coast, to be on the it at the right time you need a little luck, local knowledge and a lot of patience. Bantham is a large south-westerly facing beach that picks up any swell on the south coast with excellent banks close to the rivermouth on a lower tide. Always bigger then it looks but can often lack power. Other breaks in the area include Challaborough, Wembury (see Wembury) and Whitsands.
Bantham, along with most of the waves in this vicinity, is best on a
low- to mid-tide with a north-easterly wind. There are also left and
right peaks towards the middle of the bay and some shelter can be found
on the far west side of the beach. The rips can get strong on a
dropping tide so talk to the lifeguards (or experienced surfers) if
you’re unsure where to paddle out. Bantham can also get exceptionally
crowded in the summer and is a popular spot with most of Plymouth’s
student population.
