Llangennith

Swansea, West Glamorgan

Llangennith
Llangenith is a three mile beach with multiple peaks and is a good surf destination for all abilities, although the paddle out in big surf can be hard going. There is plenty of room for all and the rest of the beautiful Gower Peninsula to explore with rolling hills, secluded making it an outdoor adventures paradise.

Llangennith and Freshwater West have the honour of being Wales’s swell magnets: the beaches which pick up the most swell, so you've got the best chance of a successful surf holiday sticking close to these surfing hubs.

The main break is a beachbreak left and right peaks all the way, suitable for all abilities and working on all tides up to about six feet. Offshore in an easterly wind. At the far north of Llangennith, Three Peaks serves up solid waves reached by a dune hike. Rhossili at the southern end has a little shelter from southerlies and works best from mid to high tide. Mind the shipwreck!

James from PJ’s Surf Shop at Gennith says: “Llangennith is one of the best beachbreaks in the UK, with three miles of golden sand, and is suitable for beginners and experts alike. Can be a big paddle when the surf is above five feet. The best wind directions are southeast, east and northeast for clean waves but conditions can be really good on a light southwest or west wind. The north end of the beach is called Three Peaks and can be really good at high tide when the swell is small and clean. The south end at Rhossili is good at high tide and can provide shelter when the wind is blowing from a south or southwesterly direction, or when the swell is too big at Llangennith. Watch out though for the strong rip currents close to the cliffs at Rhossili. The great thing about surfing in Llangennith is that there can be 300 surfers out and you can still get some waves to yourself — just paddle down the beach a bit and you can be on your own!”

The Gower Peninsula is the perfect place to take a summer break, with Llangennith always popular due to the cheap camping, caravanning and bed and breakfast options. Three miles of sands mean that there’s always somewhere you can learn to surf without running into anyone. The Gower was the first place in Britain to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956, and offers the antidote to the Cardiff to Swansea post-industrial landscape. Again, there are hundreds of accommodation and surf school options.
