Mablethorpe

Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire

Surf in Mablethorpe and Lincolnshire is generated when deep low pressure systems pass or settle over the north coast of Scotland and across to Scandinavia with northerly winds. Mablethorpe also experiences occasional south/southeast swells, which tend to be much shorter lived. There are waves year round but mid-summer can see long flat periods. The prime time of year for surf is mid-winter when the big groundswells push in.

Mablethorpe is a fairly typical beach break with shifting peaks and long sandbars which throw out lefts and rights. The beach itself faces north-north-east and is long and shallow, so the waves are mellow and ideal for beginners. Prime swells are from the north east with perfect wind conditions being the prevailing southwesterly. The tidal range is from 5.2m min to 7.9m max throughout the year, so a tide table is handy. The beaches can be surfed at all tide states but mid- to high-tide on the push is preferable.

Mablethorpe beaches don't work well during big swells at low- to mid-tide especially, as there’s a hefty offshore sand bank which absorbs a lot of energy. Beaches here hold waves in the one- to four-foot range.

Lincolnshire is a good choice for a fast, easy and bargain UK surf holiday when the winds and swells are favourable, with lots of affordable accommodation options and a growing surf scene supporting surf schools, hire shops and a cool local crew.

Tips

Make the most of the tidal push when waves can pick up in size. Wind and swell direction will influence the strength of the sea’s lateral north to south drift, big swells and strong winds make for a fast southerly drift so consider this when choosing a place to enter the water — it won't be the same place you get out!
